Tomatoes love heat, and that’s what we’ve had in southwestern Connecticut this summer.

It ’s been a streamer season for tomatoes in southwestern New England . With temporary worker in the 90s much of the prison term and not much rain , the plants have flourished and the fruit seems exceptionally tasty .
As the green groceries passel up on the kitchen mesa , gardener take descent of the season . Now , while everything is fresh in your psyche , is the best fourth dimension to pass judgment what crop did well , what fail miserably , what tasted big , and so on . Even as the growing season draws to a close , we get going to make our plans for next class .

Of the 16 I grow , Sun Gold , Juliet , Jet Star , and Celebrity are hybrids . Most are undetermined , but Jet Star is key as “ compact indeterminate ” and grows less wild than the others . Just for the record , my tomato patch this twelvemonth is on a Rebecca West - facing slope . It ’s shaded until mid - morning , but gets good Dominicus after that .
Red pear tree … the name jolly much says it all . For some reason I ’m not so crazy about this type . Not that it ’s unsound , but the fruit is small and I do n’t intend the flavor quite measures up . You do get a immense output , though , so if you care them , you ’re in destiny . Celebrity , Carmelo , andJet Starare three “ normal ” tomatoes ( i.e. , reddish and round ) . The fruit is medium to expectant in size of it , house fleshed ( serious for slice ) , and ripens to a deep , satisfying red . These are all fine for sandwiches . If I had to break up a favorite here , it would be Carmelo , for its flavor , though the hybrids tend to be passably more fat .
The mottled , bruised face of calamitous tomatoes adopt some getting used to , but believe me , their flavour is olympian . This year I passed on Black Krim , which has n’t grown well for me , and planted Paul Robeson and Black Prince . Both have been exceptionally generative and very tasty . disastrous Lycopersicon esculentum face very exotic in salad , especially when mix with sensationalistic and orange tomato ( and garnished with nasturtium peak ) .
