A Late Autumn Visit To Beth Chatto’s Garden
It is interesting to see how a world far-famed garden seem in this sombre season when most of our garden are collapse and falling gone for the winter . Beth Chatto is deservedly renowned for her artistry in dealing with , not just color , but grain , frame and form . Even on a disconsolate day in early winter there were pleasing vistas and mass of interesting plant combination .
The beautiful , deciduous , swampland cypress , Taxodium distichum with its lovely bronze foliation was face tall by the pond . I have sex its knobbly knee like fiddling miniskirt - sculpture all around its base . I read that it used to be think that these knees are to help it ‘ breathe ’ as it grows in soggy weewee but it is now thought they are to supply constancy to the tree diagram .
By the pool there is a fine stand of the red stems ofCornus alba‘Westonbirt ’ and in front of it pile of the beautiful , puritanical , fall - flower Crocus speciosus ‘ vanquisher ’

The ponds here search wonderful all year round but I bonk them in winter with all the russet colours and the endearing shapes . The royal fern sprain a lovely colour before it vanish .
I love fern all year round but some of them really come into their own in winter . Can anyone tell me the name of this lovely little bronze fern which contrast so well with the foliage round it ?
The evergreenPolystichum setiferumis gorgeous all winter . The photo is ofPolystichum setiferum‘Wollaston ’ which is like a adorable pea plant - light-green shuttlecock with lacy plumage .

Plants which keep a pleasing shape and colour are priceless for wintertime . I love this littleSaxifragadentatawith its pinked edge .
Bergeniais a marvellous plant for winter , specially if you get one of the forms which work red in winter . ‘ Bressingham Red ’ and ‘ Eric Smith ’ have a rattling winter colour but it is best to choose them in wintertime to pick out the colour you like .
I ’m not sure whichBergeniathis is but I think it await great with the grass . pot are of path wonderful at this time of the twelvemonth I bang thisPennisetum alopercuroideswith its furry bottle brushes .

I ’m not trusted which the next grass is , maybe someone will know . Is it perhaps aMolinia ? It needs loads of space to attend its best . Behind it is aMelianthuswhich will collapse when we have a really hard Robert Lee Frost but depend wonderful at the second .
There are of path many trees and shrub looking good in this marvellous garden and I will finish with just one of them : Malus hupehensis . I love this whole genus because they make lovely wrought trees , they have beautiful blossom in spring , ( in this casing white ) , and then of course you get the wonderful fruit . genus Malus hupehensisis one of my favourites but I also adoreMalus tranistoriaandMalus coronaria‘Charlottae ’ . As you see Malus hupehensishas hatful of small red fruit . This Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is particularly graceful .
As you could ideate I did n’t come out from my sojourn to the nursery empty - handed . Well , be fair , who would ? Tomorrow I ’ll tell you what I bought .
