I do n’t know about you , but here in the Southeast we are having summer like weather condition .   Yet , our trustworthy local weatherperson is telling us tomorrow if the first day of fall .   I would hint said person take a fault from the maps on the wall and nonplus their head out the window .   It ’s hot !

But , this too shall pass and autumn will indeed be here .   So let ’s embark on conceive about what we should , and should n’t , be doing for our roses this clock time of year .

First , fertilizing .   Around here our peak tumble bloom is usually mid - October .   For that reason it ’s sometimes dainty to give the roses a little fall boost to maximize that blooming - type O - rama .   Use a unspoiled organic fertiliser but make very certain it is not a time release fertiliser !

Why ?

Because the last matter we desire to be doing is crusade tender new emergence when fall change into wintertime .   For that reasonableness you also want to utilize a fertilizer that is down in the mouth in nitrogen – the first number on the NPK scale .

Watering .   I know I talked a while back about irrigating less and I still stick out by that .   However , if you have younger plants or single that are really suffering from drought ( like some of mine are right now ) go onwards and give them a deep drenching .   We want our roses to be at their peak health entering winter so they can best survive it .   piddle is an important part of that .   A stressed out rose has less chance of surviving a inhuman northeaster .

Deadheading and trimming .   I advise you commence to slack down on these .   Doing so stir new growth and we do n’t want that right now .   Plus rose bequeath un - deadheaded develop hips , which are those shining berries you see .   They are a great source of nutrition for all variety of animals and birds during the winter so leave them on .   Plus they bet great against a fresh snow .

Continue to relish your roses all during fall for as long as they flower .   In the meantime but build up their potency and then permit them to naturally keep out down as winter comes in .

Happy Roseing!Paul
