This is quite a direct contrast to the Holy Scripture I reviewedrecently . It covers the same subject area , but in a very different mode . Viewers of BBC2 ’s Gardener ’s World will be familiar with Carol Klein . Her enthusiastic , colloquial broadcasting style come through into the book , I recall . Little chip grating in large doses but not fatally so .

The book is structured by technique , take up with seed assembling and sowing , then cuttings of various type and so on through division , layering etc . The surgical incision on seminal fluid compendium is middling thorough with helpful pictures and advice that I will utilise this year . There is a dependable section on class with good descriptions of how to manage them .

There are colour pictures throughout , often laid out as step by step guide . The pictures are full lineament , colourful and with plenty of closeup showing techniques . This is what was miss from the Peter Thompson book , which was more of a technician ’s al-Qur’an with some diagram but no picture show . If the two Scripture could engender and have a hybrid offspring , that would be a great book !

A unfavorable judgment I ’d make of Carol ’s book is that she is profligate with her inseminate advice . come trays and module galore – o.k. and dandy if you have plenty of space , or are n’t sowing many multifariousness , but otherwise dearly-won in both space and compost terms . To be fair , she does at least concede that half - trays are adequate for most needs . This book is also relatively light on specific advice and proficiency , leave it to quite excursive sections where it is sometimes unmanageable to pick out the apt share . Her gossipy style basically makes it hard than it should be to follow the advice . I do n’t bear in mind the chatty style for the most part , it compares well with Thompson book which is a footling dry , although jam packed with actionable advice .

Overall I think the book is a useful summation to the gardener program library , although I think I ’d be left need more if it was the only book I had on propagation . If forced to choose between this and Thompson ’s Word of God I would jettison Carol , I ’m afraid , albeit a footling reluctantly . Happily I have room for both , and this book is a good companion to the more technical books . I got my written matter for about 3 pound from abebooks.co.uk , good value for a book in very good condition that was £ 20 new .
