A field trip to Tillery Street Plant Co. in Austin, Texas
A lifelong making love of gardening often take shape from early experiences with houseplants or a vegetable garden . As a unseasoned adult living in apartments and lease spaces , I accumulated a large collecting of houseplants that I could move along with me from seat to place . My houseplant also aid satisfy my horticulture scabies during the winters when I crave the coloration viridity . But no matter what time of year it is , houseplants are always a great way to bring life and vibrancy into a plate ( or any other indoor space ) . Here is a profile of Tillery Street Plant Co. , a topically possess nursery in Austin , Texas , that carries a form of houseplant , including some operose - to - determine species and mixed bag .
Tillery ’s houseplant greenhouse is pack to the gill with a miscellany of metal money , including over 10 specie of genus Ficus ( Ficusspp . and cvs . , Zones 10–12 ) , at least half a dozen begonias ( Begoniaspp . and cvs . , Zones 6–12 ) , and XII of monstera ( Monsteraspp . and cvs . , Zones 10–12 ) , pothos ( Pothosspp . and cvs . , Zones 10–12 ) , philodendron ( Philodendronspp . and cvs . , Zones 9–11 ) , and calatheas ( Calatheasspp . and cvs . , zone 8–11 ) . I saw the omnipresent ( and beautiful ) genus Ficus trees that I grew up with as well as a lovely specimen I ’d never seen before : Bayan common fig tree ( F. benghalensis , Zones 10–12 ) , also known as Ficus Audrey . It has calendered ovate leaf with white veins and is much easier to wish for than the democratic but notoriously finicky fiddle - leaf Libyan Fighting Group ( Ficus lyrata , Zones 10–12 ) .
Tillery Street Plant Co. spread some of the plants they propose , including several of the more unusual varieties . If you enquire nicely , the houseplant medical specialist , Melissa , might show you the female parent plant for her personal favorite , Philodendron melanochrysum×verrucosum(Zones 10–11 ) . This philodendron hybrid does n’t have a specific vernacular name , but it is characterized by large , slightly droopy morose unripe leave with pale veins . The velvety leave alone invite speck .

Another unusual find in Tillery ’s glasshouse is the Hawaiian finger’s breadth - leafage philodendron ( zone 9–11 ) , whose exact species name I ’ve been unable to confirm ( the genus isPhilodendron ) . The prominent shiny green leaves do resemble fingers on a hand . It is easy to grow , like many philodendrons , and it reportedly can even hold up a light rime . I ’ve never seen this plant for sales agreement anywhere else , and its unusual leaf system is very typical , making it a merriment addition to anyone ’s houseplant collection ( even that of a seasoned aggregator ) .
Of all the houseplant I see at Tillery , my favorite was Swiss cheese vine ( Monstera adansonii , Zones 10–11 ) . I am fond to monsteras in ecumenical , but this one stands out for the multiple holes in each leaf , which make it its cognomen . In gain to being interesting , it ’s very easy to worry for . Melissa read that this one sells out quickly every clock time they pop the question it .
Tillery Street Plant Co. offer some houseplants already potted up and ready to endow . Another endowment alternative is to pick out a plant and a sens from their option , and they will pot it up for you for a small fee . They have some interesting and unusual pots , planter , and hanging baskets that make unparalleled housewarming gift . The staff is knowing and welcoming . Their central East Austin location is colorful , magical , and makes a great side head trip for any Austin risky venture .
