The eye of my front yard is a wasteland . I ’ve planted multiple thing out there and constantly they do badly . The ground is press , the soil is deficient , and half the stuff I plant is clinging to life and pray for some kind soul to hale in some nutrient - rich issue .

This last weekend I called in my comrades Rick and Mart for a study sidereal day . Both of them are bright . Rick has awing numerical / programming / organizational / conceptual skill and the mind of a philosopher . He also have a chipper , which makes himtrulyinvaluable . Mart is an aquaponics guru , an inventor and the owner of apopular YouTube channelwith stack of survival of the fittest info on it .
To fix this patch of yard , I ’d already been swallow manure and compost inmelon pitsas well as planting nitrogen fixers . Unfortunately , even the atomic number 7 fixers have n’t done all that well , probably due to the densification .
This young attempt will get down restore the soil from the top down . We chop down immense clunk ofTithonia diversifoliaand feed them through the shredder , along with everything else we could find , including oak limbs , moringa trees , manioc canes , Senna alatatrunks and even somecannastems .
My goal is to cover a section of the yard to a deepness of at least 6″. Even with a day ’s Charles Frederick Worth of shredding , we still only have enough to cover perhaps a 10′ x 20′ area to that depth . The temptation to thin it out is there , but I ’m resist it . I ’ve seenthe effectsof cryptic mulching with yard “ waste . ”
Next year , I must embed many , many , many moreTithonias . I ’m very pleased with them .
In addition to the 6″ of fresh immature nutrient - rich mulch , I ’m also going to add together some shredded tree diagram mulch I ’ve been keeping in modesty , plus I ’m going to mix in some biochar and composted manure .
In another incision , I plan to assay a unlike sheet : I ’ll broadfork it up , then sow a cover craw mix that includesplenty of legumes .
