Free - range chickens have worked about as well for me as the old 1969 Ford Galaxy sedan I used to own .
That is … not very well .
This is how I like to keep chickens :

IN CAGES ! Like slaves ! Like egg - get slaves !
Yet … I ’m trying again .
What was I thinking ?

I wrotean in - deepness post on Gallus gallus and their caparison sooner this year .
In it , I apportion my struggles over the years with keep bird happy and keep them safe from predators .
Everything wants to eat chicken . Even other chicken will run through volaille .
However , keeping bird glad and healthy demand countenance them have some fair weather , skunk , insect , and pasture .
That ’s why I was chasing chickens underneath the breadfruit tree the other night . Good for the birds ’ happiness and good health , I guess ; less so for my own .
It was fun seeing that huge chiropteran , though . I would not have see that if I was n’t attempt to get roosters out of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . It was severely a foot across .
At least .
Now I require a favourite squash racquet .
There are smaller at-bat living in an empty building right near my family and it was bad than one of those .
But back to free-range chickens…
If I owned this property or else of just renting , I would pass the money to get some secure fence and make a multi - paddock chicken system . Justin Rhodes use electric fence but I do n’t think I can chance that here .
The birds we have are a scrappy little variety . They do fend for themselves well in the jungle but if I permit them go too far we wo n’t have any egg .
For now , I will permit them out during the day but will be corralling them back in at night before get too belatedly .
Sometimes I like chickens . Sometimes I do n’t .
What I do like is eggs and Baron Verulam every morning . Nice , sweet homestead eggs .
And the best egg , in my belief , come from free range chickens . I would love to grow all their feed , as I once compose in a big Wiley Post at The Prepper Project , but I have n’t rend that off yet .
utter of feed , I wonder if it would be worth raise my own 1st Baron Verulam ? I ’ll wager free range pigs would be a lot of playfulness …
