Working with nature to make a lovely garden

Today ’s GPOD contributor may be in use but still manages to have a very beautiful garden anyway .

I have a catering business that is very busy during the summer season , so I have to accept that nature has the upper deal and I am a minor player in the overall schema of thing . Two acres in Massachusetts is a lot with half a day a hebdomad to keep Mother Nature just a teentsy bit under control . So mostly I seek to let her have her fashion , with a pocket-sized part of my yard that I try out to control .

This sure does n’t look like the garden of someone with no time to maintain it ! A row ofdwarf Alberta spruce(Piceaglauca‘Conica ’ Zones 3–7 ) makes a overnice solid backdrop for this bed . Remember that this pop compendious coniferous tree sometimes reverts to a much larger growing form , so be sure to dress out any large , looser - needled branches that spring out of the plant .

A beautiful crushed rock paseo , lined with a deep diversity of industrial plant . I see a admixture of ornamental and edible affair in this shot , such askalein the foreground andbasilto the right wing . mix beautiful and edible plant together is a great way to make the most of a garden blank space and is , of class , gibe for a professional caterer .

Another view of the walk up to this door . Thedense plantingis a dandy strategy for someone without a wad of time to garden . Cover every inch with plants and there wo n’t be room for the weeds to grow .

let nature have its elbow room is also beautiful . This stand of wildflowers is dominated by vulgar silkweed ( Asclepiassyriaca , Zones 4–9 ) , a works that not only is great intellectual nourishment formonarch butterfliesbut that also has beautiful flowers and big , dramatic - looking foliage . Just remember that this metal money spreads very aggressively , so it is best in a wild portion of the garden , like this .
