It ’s around this time of year when the gauzy folly of sowing so many damn seeds is clear . All that pricking out , pot on , otherwise mess about can be a bit time consuming . I did a quick head count the other eve . Despite being passably strict about the number of seedlings I kept , I still have well over 300 seedling pricked out or pot on . There are more to derive , either of late sown or reluctant germinators . The hard-nosed , noetic types among you may be cogitate now “ where on Earth is he go to put them all ? ” , but to you I say “ that ’s not of import correctly now ” .
Once prick out , normally into trays , after a few weeks the seedling are ordinarily quick to move on to individual pots or in to mental faculty cells . This year I have made use of some quite deep module cells in which petunias arrive last year , cutting them up into handy size . These are n’t much smaller than 7 cm quite a little and make life easier from a logistical degree of sight – easier to move about and I only need 1 recording label per section . Let ’s have a look at some of those 300 .

I ’m growing ricinus for the first clip . While the seeds develop quite tight , they straight off looked quite sickly . I ’m not sure why , perhaps they were crave . I potted on the three respectable , giving them plenty of way and a bit of feed by way of the John Innes # 3 compost .
I liberate some germ from crocosmia ‘ Devil ’ at Waterperry garden back in October . I may at some point make out to regret this , but for now the seedlings seem happy enough .
I am get a number of different geraniums from seed this year . Some have been deadening to pullulate but these g. sanguineum are develop away mirthfully enough .

As are the g. magnificum . I just have a few of each character .
I ’m face frontwards to the genus Sidalcea ‘ rosaly ’ . These were sown on the 2nd of March so are quite small still . Also eff as prairie mallow , they are related to hollyhocks but much humble . This miscellany has flower spikes with soft pink flowers and should be felicitous in full Dominicus or fond shade . I may not get flower this year …
I half - heartedly grew nigella last year but with piteous result . I ’ve sown a bunch this yr too , the common Iranian jewels mix . Just a few have germinated , so I will leave them be for a while before prick up out .

The Mexican fleabane are doing nicely in their module tray section . One could contend that I have too many of them . I figure I can set some to overflow the edge of planters .
I have some lobelia every year . I usually attempt to uprise some from come , leave them too long in the modules then they pall . Then I buy some . This year will be unlike . Honest .
I have judge to grow genus Eryngium from germ but never had any joyousness . This year I have seed of e. ‘ Graham Thomas Selection ’ so am trying manfully once more . I can at least account some sprouting . Once seeded , their 7 cm hatful was left out in the cold soma for a few month , which in this case has done the conjuring trick . I have seedlings !

The lupine keep to do well , I think they will soon be quick to pot on to spacious accommodation .
I have these nemophilia ‘ pennie black ’ seeds for Christmas . A low ontogeny , front row kind of industrial plant , I gather . They are doing quite nicely in their section of mental faculty tray .
After a couple of wasteland years , I have had some cosmos joyfulness this year . I have a few different variety on the go , include some from seeded player saved last class . I am sorry to report , however , that there has been a rupture in my critter defence . The entire pot of c. sulphureous were crunch back to the compost . I later regain a fertile , happy snail clinging to the side of a nearby pot . It was lob with due ceremonial into the weedy patch over the back fence .

No sulphureous for me this year then . Happily I have others taking up the stress . Just have to keep the beasties forth .
I could go on . And on . But I have actual horticulture to do , and so do you , I expect .
I ’ll be back in a few week with more sprouting thoughtfulness .
