Finding plants that love a difficult climate
Today ’s photograph come from LeAnn Kirkpatrick .
Nestled in the snow and cold of the upper Snake River valley , this has been our family for 26 years . When we buy the theatre , the yard was average at best . Every year I spent hundreds buying annual bedding plant with very mixed results . I ’ve append a lot of perennials too . These are a few of my 2019 dearie .
This planting is at our front door . That pink and empurpled regalia is really planted in three tiers of terra - cotta plenty . The undimmed yellow Dahlia pinnata is in the primer beside them .

Between our two service department doorway is a ego - tearing skunk with thunbergia(Thunbergiaalata , one-year ) , a peach - color begonia , coleus , and white petunia ! I was pretty proud that it live through several concentrated Robert Lee Frost .
With the works in this image , I was essay to underwrite the neighbour ’s old plank fence . The container is a punishing felt pouch spill over with tuberous begonias and impatiens(Impatienswalleriana , yearly ) . In the bottom I ran out ofbegoniasand impatiens , so I used two petunia and asweet potato vine(Ipomoea batatas , Zones 10–11 or as an one-year ) which I end up take out because they did n’t savour the shade on the north side of the fence between the lilac tree diagram . I will definitely be doing that pocket again !
A bright chicken aquilege , probablyAquilegiachrysantha(Zone 3–9).A. chrysanthais one of the species of columbine aboriginal to western North America , so it thrives in those climate .

A beautiful ascend looking its best .
The savage ancestors of our hybrid garden peonies come up mostly from the juiceless , rugged interior of Eastern Europe and western Asia , so it is no wonder they are good plants for places with standardised climates , such as Idaho .
Meanwhile , we are build a newfangled house so that we can downsize and age in place , and I am trying to figure out how to make a stunninglow - maintenance gardenand landscape with perennials and with yearly I can mature in my cold frame / greenhouse . Any suggestions would be appreciated ! Zone 4 at the animal foot of the Tetons is not the easy place to find beautiful perennial that are brave enough !
