I have been busy adding planters to an otherwise boring passageway between our home and our neighbor ’s menage . It is in shade on one side , North cladding , the other side gets some sun , properly key as fond tincture I guess – it is in the south facing but shaded at time by next room access ’s sign and the fence . I wish the conception of a living rampart and have on occasion thought about buying some of those hanging sack . I recently view a brilliant living wall arrangement onJack Wallington ’s web log , effectively a wooden shelving unit of measurement placed against his fence , in a likewise minute , shady smirch . After admiring this for a while I thought I would have a crack at build my own , using Jack ’s flora listing as a starting point . I ’ve build mine and planted it up . Here is how I did it … .
Tools needed :
I used scrap Grant Wood from put away pallets , but obviously the wood could be scavenge in other ways or even grease one’s palms at a push . All join are made by pre - drilling then screwing together . The pre - drilling prevents the wood splitting when the screws are tightened .
The size of it of the frame I built was governed by the lengths of wood I happened to have . I built each side using two planks , joined together by piece of battening cut to size .
On the two long English I added an extra slice of batten at each final stage . Aside from impart these side more rigidness , this also provides somewhere to bind the two poor sides . After this stage I had two long side with three part of battening , one at each end and one in the middle , like the scene , plus two myopic sides , with battening just in the middle .

I found that this was a piffling unstable , the rectangular frame would well become a parallelogram if present a light shove . To specify this I summate some extra brace to the interior of the rear of the frame . The shelves were made by simply love two pallet board to the splosh battening .

I could have just bear the frame against the wall but thought it would be more stable , and await good , if I attached it to the wall . So that ’s the construction polish off , now to the fun part – the planting !
I prescribe my ferns fromshadyplants.net . Not being a fernatic , I used Jack ’s planting list as a usher , then chose the ferns I like the look of . I ordered the following ferns , one of each :
Ferns mostly grow in woody area in the wilderness , so I used what I hope is a suitable mix for the planting boxes :
I was n’t too careful about proportions , I just chucked in a bit of each and mixed it up .
For the planting I had 4 or 5 plants per boxful . I ca n’t say there was too much thought process put into the placing , but I was direct for the large ferns to be in the gloomy planter box . I will get them grow on a mo , I can always move them around if needed .
I enjoyed making this , the plant were by far the most costly element , the construction probably cost me less than £ 20 admit the window boxes . I ’m really looking forward to seeing it develop . I ’ll necessitate to keep an eye on the watering in the first twelvemonth , but once they are a piece more established they should need less count after .
