Pereskia aculeatais native toAntilles , Panama , andColombia . It is also report from southerly Florida in theUnited StatesandMexico , perhaps as an escape .
Pereskia aculeatais an unusual shrubby cactus with long party whip - comparable branches that bear glossy dark green leaves and cushionlike areoles with uncoiled or hooked spines . The branches are at first erect , afterwards shin , up to 33 feet ( 10 m ) long , up to 1.2 column inch ( 3 cm ) in diameter , and develop on trees in their aboriginal habitat . The areoles bear 1 to 3 straight spines near the woody base of the plant and pairs of short drug-addicted thorn in the leaf axils towards the top of the branches . The leaves are oblong to ovate with a short petiole , measuring up to 2.8 inches ( 7 cm ) long and 1.6 column inch ( 4 cm ) wide . In home ground , they are deciduous in the dry time of year . The backbone are 1.4 inches ( 3.5 cm ) long , brown to nearly blackened , with variously gloss basis in new increase , becoming gray with eld .

The peak appear arranged in terminal or alar panicle aggregated towards the top of the branches in summer . They are powerfully scented , up to 2 inch ( 5 centimeter ) in diameter , and variegate in colouring material from white , ointment , and xanthous to pinkish . The edible yield are globose berries with inconspicuous thornless areoles , yellow or orange when right , up to 0.8 inches ( 2 cm ) in diameter , and stop liquid dark brownish seeds .

As with many cacti , Pereskias can be almost ignore and still prosper . One of the major advantages these plants puzzle as houseplant is their ease . Overwatering or overfeeding them is a big danger than neglecting them because it can damage their roots . If you repot them , recall to pull up stakes them alone shortly to avoid overstressing them , and keep an eye out for common houseplantpests . Many of these cacti ca n’t be produce as houseplants anyway due to their shrubby growing habit , and others are very rare , but when you do find out , Pereskias can be good in finish .

They like dry status and do n’t need to be repotted often , but it is still a undecomposed idea to review theirsoilby occasionally repotting . Be heedful when repotting any cactus so as not to get hurt by its shrill spines . lift the plant life from its mix and replace it in a raw container before backfilling it with territory . Do not water for a few weeks after repotting .
