Long Beans ( Vigna unguiculata subsp . sesquipedalis)are scrumptious super productive Summer vegetable that   add up interest to the garden and dinner party plates . They are called a bean ,   but they do n’t taste like green bean plant . They are tight kindred to the southerly / Cow Pea , but people do n’t usually shell them for their pea . They in reality taste more like Asparagus officinales than beans or pea plant . These weird bonce attic are unequalled , definitely   a little unusual looking , and incredibly rewarding .

Long Beans are a great pick for areas with spicy and humid summer . If you live in an area where cow peas can be grown , you should try growing Red - Seeded Long Beans .   There are other change in the same folk uncommitted , including Red Noodle Beans . But , I   am not as fond of them . The Red - Seeded green pod “ Yard - Long ” miscellany is the Long Bean that is most delicious .

They are a slow harvest to get start in the Spring , because much like their black - eyed cousins , they love the warmth . When the days start heating up , these vine   will suddenly take off . So , you good have your wager or trellises in place . These beans are fast climbers and they will apace regain something to grab on to when they get quick to reach for the sky .   I kept these several years in large spate on 5 foot bean tepee . They performed well in pots . But , this year I have them in ground on those tipi as center pieces in our front thousand veg gardens .

Long bean with blooms

They are a lovely crop in addition to being yummy . The foresighted cascading pods are quite eye - catching , and the purple blossoms of Long Beans are as moderately as any angelical pea plant flush . The emmet seem to concur with me about the blooms .

petite ants connect the assorted winged pollinator that lean the Long Bean prime . These vine , blooms , and pod seem to attract an interesting regalia of bugs – both honest and unsound . Every yr we have grow them , they have attracted aphids . I do n’t charge the aphid for latch on to them , because they are so tasty . The sassy little aphids have   at times covered all of the new growth and young beans on our vines . The first yr I grew retentive beans , I sprayed them regularly with insecticidal max . This method acting worked , but it was time consuming and expensive . The 2nd   twelvemonth I grew them , I unloose dame bugs next to the vines . The lady bugs perplex around all season   dining on   any aphids that showed up . This will be my method acting for   aphid direction on   our beans from now on .    In addition to eating the bad bug , the lady hemipterous insect offer entertainment and education for our kid when they decided to lie ball on our prospicient bean farewell . Watching the ballock hatch and the lilliputian “ gator ” maturate was really fun for the kid and for me , as well .

I have read thatKudzu beetlescan and will destroy retentive Bean crops . If you exist right next to a Kudzu patch , you might have this problem . I have not . If you do have a Kudzu beetle problem in your arena , you probably wo n’t find a round-eyed solution like ladybugs . From my understanding , they are as hard to get free of as Kudzu .

Other than underage buggy problems , growing long dome is a breeze . They seem to have two thrill of growth and blooms every summer . The first is really a fairly brusque full point of production ; and , then they take a break . Do n’t draw the plants at this power point ! Top   dress with compost or fertilise with organic fertilizer and just await 2 to 3 calendar week for round two . The 2d flush of peak and beans last pretty much all Summer , right up until the first freeze .   I have thought it was strange that my Long Beans seemed to take a break mid - season . But , I have hear from several other gardeners that have experienced the same matter . Apparently , this is just what Long Beans do .

Once they come out producing the 2nd crop , Red - sown Long Beans are plentiful . programme on foot every day and divvy up with friends . The two tepee that we maturate in pot produced enough beans for our family to eat them 2 times a calendar week for most of the Summer , and we share some with friends . That much food for thought produced from two potted planting was mind blowing to me . These plants produce massive amounts of pods that mature insanely fast . Our long attic fertilize us often , and they feed us well .

Our favorite ways to enjoy Red Seeded Long Beans are : grilled , sautéed with garlic and pecans , poke fun with a bit of olive oil , or touch - fried . Unlike gullible beans , they do not savour great when wangle in water supply or steam . The flavor and grain of Long Beans is in effect when cooked dry or with   a spot of oil . If we grill them , we keep them long and place them now on the grill . If we are cooking them in any other agency , we switch off them into reasonably sized pieces .

I   prepare a immense pile of grill long beans   for   our 4th of July household gathering a few eld ago . I want to introduce my new favourite vegetable to everyone and I require the presentation to be fun and interesting ,   So I kept them all really long . It was extremely entertaining to see everyone struggle to keep the 2 - foot - prospicient bean on their plates . It was even funnier watching them attempt to eat them . It seems to be natural to require to slurp them like noodles . But , they are n’t really flexible enough for slurping . So , be kind and verify people have knives on script if you plan on serve them whole .

If your Long Bean pods start fill out and get too big to eat , you’re able to glean them as peas for blast . Last year , after going on a short holiday , we came home to plenty of over - maturate fuel pod take with plump peas . I shell them and make them like I would any other Southern Pea ; slow and downcast simmered in   chicken stock with smoked bones . They were fabulous pea , probably right than   Purple Hull peas .

However you fake them or wait on them , Red Seeded Long Beans are as fun to eat as they are to get . When the first Robert Frost hits , I will be deplorable to see them go aside . So , I shall eat as many of them as I can before the first frost rolls in .

I will soon be trying to dry Long Beans “ Leather Britches ” way to preserve them for the wintertime and I ’m looking forrard to   love them in   spicy saucy Asiatic peach . I will partake recipes if they are a succeeder . A Quaker of mine of late displace Red - Seeded Long Bean hole with her abundant harvests . Hopefully she will share a jolt of those real soon . She was kind enough to partake in pictures   of her beans for usage in this post , including this one . That is a pot of Long Beans !

Try grow long beans next year , and you will want to raise them every yr . Just keep in psyche , that they   raise a ton of food . So , if you plant spate of them , you may need a wayside tie-up to trade your extras .
