A cottage-style garden
I ’m Sheila Abair , and I garden in northern Vermont ( Zone 4b/5a ) . I have sent in pictures before(Sheila ’s Vermont Garden ) .
Gardening runs in my family . I am draw in tocottage - style gardenswith lashings of windingpaths , and I enjoywater features .
A pleasing compounding ofHosta(Zones 3–8 ) , peony(Paeoniahybrid , Zones 3–7 ) , andClematis(Zones 4–9 )

This is the view through two overlap ‘ Hakuro Nishiki ’ willows(Salixintegra‘Hakuro Nishiki ’ , Zones 5–7 ) toward thepatio . you may see hostas and lungwort in the front with apeonyand barberry(Berberisthunbergii , Zones 4–8 ) behind them . Across the patio is a volley of phlox(Phloxpaniculata , Zones 4–9 ) , my corkscrew hazel(Corylusavellana‘Contorta ’ , Zones 4–8 ) , and threadleaf false cypress(Chamaecyparispisifera , Zones 4–8 ) .
The patio is surrounded by a embarrassment of plantings that create a wonderful serene quad to be in . I love the orangeGeum(Zones 5–9 ) next to thehydrangeayet to bloom . Evergreensare in the forefront . TherhododendronI planted between them struggles a bit , but I wish its contrast foliage . The small cosmetic tree diagram to the left was one of my first plantings ; unluckily , I do n’t know what it is , but it give rise yellow flowers in spring .
Many of the dame ’s rockets(Hesperismatronalis , Zones 3–8 ) in front of my garden shed ego - seeded . As they pass , the Canterbury bells(Campanulaspecies ) at their feet will begin to flower and look gracious drooping over the black fencing material . The weigela(Weigelaflorida , Zones 5–9 ) has finished blossom but was amazing with its cascading stems and pink efflorescence . My attempts athypertufa potssit on thegravel path . There is a globe cedar(Thujaoccidentalis , Zones 2–7 ) with some bugleweed(Ajugareptans , Zones 3–10 ) to the right field .

This is another image of plantings surround the patio . you’re able to see the base of the corkscew Pomaderris apetala , with sucker galore , daylily ‘ Stella D’Oro’(Hemerocallis‘Stella D’Oro ’ , Zones 3–10 ) yet to blossom , penstemon(Penstemondigitalis , Zones 3–8 ) , Solomon ’s seal(Polygonatum , Zones 4–8 ) , threadleaf false cypress , phlox(Phloxpaniculata , Zones 5–9 ) , and aJapanese maple(Acer palmatum , Zones 5–9 ) .
These plantings make full what used to be an aboveground pool . Some splashes of colouring are from the paeony , bearded iris(Irishybrid , Zones 3–8 ) , and otherperennials . The corkscrew hazel fairly command but is balanced a small by the Japanese maples and barberry .
eve view of the pond surrounded by a Funka , barbate sword lily , and a rododendron

In theshade garden , hostas , Solomon ’s seal , lungwort(Pulmonaria , Zones 3–9 ) , andfernsget a fiddling late good afternoon sunshine . The clematis is just set about to bloom .
This view toward the home from the patio is dominated by the Japanese maple . The twopotsare seeded withviolas . Japanese anenome(Anemonehupehensis , zone 4–8 ) will flower later , but it still provides gracious leaf . In the desktop is the fencing I designed and my husband and ally built .
