A commenter takes exception to my giant lettuce - filled compost voltaic pile :

“ @davidthegood , why would one want to introduce GMO wheat which has been spray with Glyphosate as an ingredient to compost and then add to that as a top stuffing to foods which one will be ingest ? This seems like total insanity and a huge contradiction to me if one is purportedly growing organically . You devote attention to the hay you are willing to accept into your garden , so I will necessitate why are you not use the same ethic to your compost ? ”

“ First , hay with Grazon will literally destroy a garden . This bread almost for certain will not . Second , 99 % of Americans are eating this type of bread at some point . Composting it and transforming the waste product into a better food is deserving teaching . Third , compost it is less destructive than throwing it in a landfill . Fourth , nature is very good at breaking down and binding up various traces of toxins that may be in this lettuce . That ’s my reasoning – start with what you have and do your dependable . The primary point is to grow food , and if we observe the organic innocence spiral , fairly soon we ’re making gardening almost impossible again . ”

My “ ethic ” on growing solid food and compost is to , first of all , develop solid food to eat your family .

If you ca n’t scavenge for materials to make compost because you ’re frightened that they might have some pesticide balance in them , you ’re going to be in a big place . If you are scared to till , so you make a tiny little no - till garden that feeds almost no one , then you are in a spoilt place . If you are afraid of all chemical plant food so you try out to only apply compost when you do n’t have near enough compost , then you are in a defective position .

Grow food first . Even a conventional spray garden in a backyard is better than a huge , conventional farm far aside , with produce that is transport thousands of miles and handled by unknown the great unwashed in strange way , and then , after aging for too long , is buy in plastic bags at your local supermarket .

You really can get stuck in an organic pureness spiral .

I do n’t like GMOs , pesticides , weed killer and other evils , but we have to work with what we have .

And when life sentence gives us a passel of mill kale , we compost it .

My personal line of credit is line at spray chemical substance pesticides . We do not do that in our garden , since we do n’t want to exhaust green groceries that has been spray with poison . The integral theme makes me nauseated and strikes me as true insanity .

Consider This

When I till a garden large enough to fee our mob , I am state we should never till

When I make compost , I am often tell it ’s the “ haywire style ”

When I use deep mulch , I am told that “ deep mulch attracts bullet and bugs ”

When I utilize commercial fertiliser I am told I ’m poisoning my garden

When I used supposedly “ organic ” manure I really did poison my garden , killing most of my works

When we use cardboard as a weedblock , we ’re severalize that there are toxin in cardboard

When we use plastic as a weedblock , we ’re told that plastic will destroy the earth

When we trance rainwater we ’re tell it ’s contaminated by the cap , the barrel , or by planes spraying poison in the sky

When we do n’t capture rainwater we ’re recite we ’re being wasteful and “ why in the world would you utilize city water ? ? ? ”

patently , the answer to all of this is to quit horticulture , correct ?

No . Just do your expert with what you have , and works towards being a right steward of the land you have . You ’ll never please everyone , and you ’ll never do anything at all if you listen to all the opposing voices .

Grow food the better you’re able to and let God classify it out .
